Over my illustrious gaming careerer I have played thousands of games. Some good, some brilliant, some bad, few perfect. Yet one genre has stuck out in my field of choice as the sole heir to the hierarchy of perfection - The RPG. In all honesty this truly is my definitive choice of video game genre. It has it all; story telling, fantasy, science fiction, huge battles...you name it and an RPG can have it. Now, don't put me on blast just yet, I love other genres too! First Person Shooters are most likely my second drug of choice followed by the ever dying niche market known as "The Fighting Game." Yet, these valued outlets pale in comparison to the enjoyment I get out of an RPG chalk full of epic battles, beautiful graphics, lush story telling and a whopping 60+ hours of game play. Now thats getting your money's worth y'all!
Notable RPG's that stand out and have survived the test of time are certainly games like the
Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, Disgaea, Zelda...the list could go on and on. However, this post needs to be short, sweet and to the point; plus I'm hungry and need to eat soon or Mr. Cranky Pants will come out. There is however one
series (emphasis on series, folks...not single game) of RPG's that have struck me to be the greatest. The series has been around for years and is kind of like the sleeper hit of role playing games. They are wildly popular in the far East (Japan/China/Korea) and caught on here in the states back in the mid 1990's. I'm talking about the beloved
Tales Series.
There has been only two games in my lifetime that I have sunk more than 120+ hours into. The first one being my all time favorite game out of all genres Disgaea for the PS2 (172 Hours of logged game play) and the second one being Tales of Symphonia for the Nintendo Game Cube (130 Hours of logged game play). Symphonia had it all; huge real time battles, a beautifully composed score, a masterfully written story that is up there with the likes of Final Fantasy 7 and Ocarina of Time, and graphics to die for. Within the first 10 minutes of popping the game in, playing out the first few scenarios and seeing what was in store; I just knew this game was going to be special. Hell, you can't even find the game for less than 60 bucks on Ebay now a these days, it has become a cult classic!
OK, so it's taken me a long time to make my overlapping point here. However, it's well worth the elongated and sometimes mouthy three paragraph introduction...so here goes. The new entry into the
Tales of series entitled: Tales of Vesperia (spirited sequel to Symphonia) is now an XBox 360 exclusive! Dated for release sometime this year this installment couldn't have come at a better time and to be an exclusive for "us" 360 owners is a privilege in its own rite.

Tales of Vesperia (テイルズ オブ ヴェスペリア, Teiruzu obu Vesuperia) is the newest and tenth main entry into the
Tales of series. It was announced on
December 22nd,
2007 at
Jump Festa. The game's first trailer confirmed that the Character Designer is
Kōsuke Fujishima, the Chief Director and Producer is Yoshito Higuchi (who previously worked on both
Tales of Symphonia and
Tales of the Abyss), the game is being developed by
Namco Tales Studio and its animated movies will be done by
Production I.G[1]. It has been confirmed on Gamespot that
Vesperia will be exclusively for Xbox 360, though a Playstation 3 port is still possible.
[2] Bonnie Pink will sing the main theme for both the Japanese and American release.
[3] According to IGN, Vesperia may see a release in the United States and Japan close to each other, though no confirmed date of release has been given.

The game play in my opinion is what makes the Tales games stick out so much.
All battles are actually done in real time, meaning there's no taking turns like in the typical RPG. Over past installments this is what has set the Tales franchise apart from all others; Fast paced, over clocked brawls engulfed with magic and strategy. Though the fights are done in real time doesn't necessarily mean you can just 'Bum Rush' your opponents in hopes to a fast victory. You do that and you're up "Shit's Creek" in a hurry (excuse the language). Battles need to be thought out before hand and analyzed. Bring the
wrong weapons in and your toast. Bring a sorcerer into a knife fight, PLOW your dead. This is the type of game where wits meet brains and testicular fortitude is amplified by thinking things through...not rushing things.
Tales of Vesperia makes this year a special year for not only me but another fellow RPG lover: One Mister SS Soulstealer, fellow writer/contributor to Warp 9 Gaming. With Too Human, Infinite Undiscovery and now Tales of Vesperia all set for 2008 releases we will have our proverbial hands full for sure...and I couldn't be happier.
