In terms of value, not all gems are created equal. Some are technically ‘precious’, others aren’t. There is no universal grading system, there is no consistency. And if there is something the competitive fighting community values over everything — it is consistency.

The new ‘gem’ system in Street Fighter X Tekken caused a fair amount of controversy within a strident competitive community used to stripped back, refined tests of skill. Simply put, the gem system is an attempt by Capcom to add customisation to your fighter. You can select, say, Ken, then endow Ken with specific abilities. Think of it like loadouts in Call of Duty — an attempt to tailor your experience to your own specific play style. There are gems that allow you to block automatically, gems that allow players to pull off special moves via a simpler input system.

Gems could be seen as a mechanism that reduces Street Fighter X Tekken’s skill cap, making it easier for new players and, conversely, more difficult for competitive players to develop their raw skill through practice.

In other words: ‘gems’ in Street Fighter X Tekken represent precisely the kind of feature competitive communities hates.
Or does it?

DIAMONDS:

Seth Killian doesn’t think so, and he should know. Now a Community Manager at Capcom, Seth has major roots in the competitive Street Fighter scene. Remember this video? Perhaps the most famous clip in competitive gaming’s history? Seth filmed that. He is deeply ingrained in the community, and he understands its concerns.

“Yeah the competitive community is quite worried about the gems,” begins Seth. “I’m in that competitive camp so I understand. Any time you make changes, it’s like SACRILEGE! UNACCEPTABLE!

“I get that, because I had the same reaction myself internally. I was excited about the idea of customisable characters on paper, but then I started playing and seeing how the whole thing was evolving and I was thinking, ‘this is going to be a hot mess, I better go find another job pretty quick!’

“But then I actually went hands on with the prototypes and it started pushing my nerd buttons.”

Street Fighter X Tekken has literally been built around the inclusion of gems. It’s as central a feature as focus attacks in Street Fighter 4, or parrying in Street Fighter 3. Elements of the gem system are intended to make the game more accessible to new gamers, but Seth hopes they’ll ultimately result in a new meta-game, a system that adds depth to an already fluid fighting system.

“I started trying out the ones I thought would be cheap — I was using for an autoblock gem and a meter builder, choosing Zangief and just running in and piledriving everyone! That build didn’t work out for me, so we had to balance and evolve over time. But once you start playing with the gems, you move from trepidation and fear to thinking of all the possibilities. Now I wake up from dr

“And it’s not as though I could give a beginner player what the internet has decided is the best character with his optimal load out, and then have him play me and he’ll win! Because I’ll smash him — it’s not a win button!

“I play golf once every three years, and you could hand me Tiger Woods’ clubs and his set up, and it might help me a little, but it probably won’t make that much of a difference! I’d be much better with the opportunity to take a second mulligan or something. Beginner gems are for beginners. We’re not trying to make this a noob friendly game; we’re just trying to extend that hand. We’re trying to minimise the barriers to entry as much as possible.”

BALANCE:

The success of gems will, of course, boil down to one essential issue: balance. Are these multiple customisation elements fair? Can they be exploited? Is there a single optimum load out that will break the game in a competitive sense. It’s an issue that Seth Killian is keenly aware of.

“We could definitely blow it,” admits Seth. “But the thing with gems is that rather than there being some sort of optimal gem set up, it really depends on your play style.

“Like with the attack gems — some gems, like the power up gems only work when you meet an activation criteria. So a level 1 gem has an easy activation criteria like hit three normal moves. That’ll definitely happen in a game unless you get totally beaten down! But for relatively easy activation, it’s a smaller reward; maybe you’ll just get a 10% damage boost. A level 3 gem is balanced out by giving you, say 30% damage bonus, but it’s much harder to activate.

“It’s interesting because it can affect your play-style, like you choose to do certain combos because it helps you activate certain gems. It’s a cool meta game.”

If gems are balanced in the way Seth hopes they will be, the system will help people play to their own strengths as a player.

“I do think some work better than others — but it’s really about play-style. Even if there is an idea about what works best, that might not work for you.

“Even if the internet agrees on an optimum loadout, that might not be best for your style.”

The gems themselves make for an interesting meta-game, but Seth believes it’ll also provide a new psychological element to competitive battles. Once a gem is activated, it’s important to play to the strengths of that new ability. If you’ve managed to activate an attack gem, should you play more aggressively? Will that give your opponent more openings? In that sense gems add a real dynamic layer of drama to proceedings.

“Once the gems activate it create a whole new mind game,” claims Seth. “Say I manage to activate my 30% power boost — that doesn’t mean the opponents health bar is automatically going to go down! I still have to hit you! This makes me more prone to attack, which means it can sometimes be a liability.

“We’ve barely been scratching the surface on it, in terms of our own internal testing, but it’s flexible enough that I think it’ll produce some interesting results.”

ACTIVATION:

When new elements are added to games that are considered ‘competitive’ the instinct is to remove it. It’s only natural — it’s difficult to adapt to new elements, particularly if you’ve spent years honing your skills in one particular discipline. Capcom has added the ability to turn off the gem system, but the team is adamant gems don’t represent a cheat system — it’s an integral part of Street Fighter X Tekken and should be respected as such.

“You can actually play a game with no gems, you don’t need to turn them on,” begins Seth. “But on the other side of things, we have actually built our game around the idea that gems will be used.

“Online there is currently no way to screen people who have gems turned on. But if the community reacts negatively, I’m sure we’ll patch in an ability to screen for them.”

On Super Street Fighter 4 3D on the 3DS, players were able to screen out gamers armed with the unfair advantage of touch screen controls. Initially Seth believed a similar option should exist for players who wanted to disable gems, but creator Yoshinori Ono was adamant that gems would not provide players with an unfair competitive advantage. Therefore Street Fighter X Tekken does not provide players with the option to screen for players using gems.

Seth believes it’s about having faith a system the team trusts implicitly.

“Ono-San was really worried that gems were considered some sort of cheat — because this is the core mode. This is what we’ve spent the most time balancing. This is what we balanced around. I didn’t necessarily disagree, but it was one of those things where I was saying maybe we should consider an option.

“I’m just cautious. I come from the competitive scene, and I wondered if they needed a way to turn it off if they didn’t like it. But Ono-San was like ‘this is the way we built the game’, you know a kind of stand by your man sort of thing! This is the girl we brought to the dance! We didn’t want to ghetto-ise this feature.

“It’s going to be a learning experience. Parts of it might work brilliantly out of the gates, or maybe not. But it’s something we’re willing to experiment with.”

PERSPECTIVE:

Faith in such an untested system may seem arrogant, particularly for those with specific expectations regarding how a competitive fighting game should work, but Seth understands the reservations — he’s just looking for a bit of patience. And perspective.

“Sometimes I want to step back and say: ‘let’s have a little bit of perspective here,” says Seth. “It’s not the end of the world, we’re on the same team — we want this to be a success.’

“If these guys were half as strident about, you know, foreign policy as they were about new features, we might live in a better world! But it never bothers me because I come from the same place, and it shows how much the community is invested in these games.

“If you’re building a game and you want to make something for the ages, I think there’s no higher compliment than people willing to freak out! It’s not necessarily pleasant, but ultimately it means you’re into something good.”

4. The A Fireball links into EX Elbow anywhere on the screen if you’re spaced correctly
5. You can only use the Elbow after the Super if the opponent is crouching.
6. 843 damage isn’t too bad for a HD combo that only uses 2 stock.
7. 1 KiloDamage HD combo, with a lot of Elbows.
8. This combo is evil, getting 3 hits on that DP is a bloody pain…

2D fighting game Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 launches only nine months after Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Why so soon?

It's to do with "things most gamers don't care about, even though they're realities that affect every gamer's life," Capcom fighting guru Seth Killian told Eurogamer. That is, corporate release schedules and legal contracts.

"Marvel is a big company that has their own schedule of licenses with windows," Killian explained. "They have a huge impact on things like that. To have the wide range of characters we've been able to have in the game...

"We have the license for this specific game, but other companies outside of Capcom have licenses for other Marvel games that impinge. So we have to find specific times where we're able to release products. It's on the Capcom side and on the Marvel side."

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, due out this month, is just one of a number of games based on Marvel comics to launch this year.

After Capcom launched MVC3 in February, Sega released Thor, then Captain America. Activision's recently released Spider-Man: Edge of Time, developed by Beenox, and X-Men: Destiny, created by Silicon Knights, followed.

And after the launch of UMVC3, more Marvel video games will release. Activision, with developer Beenox, will launch a new Spider-Man game around July 2012 to tie in with the new Spider-Man movie.

"I don't ask anybody to feel sympathetic about that," Killian added. "These kinds of corporate realities and legal contracts and things like that shape all of our lives whether we like it or realise it or not."

But if UMVC3 has to release in November, why not launch it as downloadable content - or, as with Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, as downloadable content and a standalone disc?

According to Killian, that's down to the East versus West cultural divide.

"Japan is still very much not a DLC market. DLC sales in general in Japan are vastly lower than they are here, even with popular games. DLC is not as much of a going concern. And online gaming in general is a lower adoption rate. The percentage of people playing any given title online in Japan is much lower.

"Capcom has had different schools of thought internally. You've seen on the Street Fighter front has been a little more on the DLC side. But even on the Arcade Edition there was a balance there where they did do a disc release but they also made it available as DLC.

"Capcom obviously has strong roots in the disc based tradition. That's the way most games are sold in Japan, so this is the way to approach it naturally. Clearly they're active in a global market, but are putting their toes in the water of shifting tastes for consumers in other places. Having just an all DLC release would be considered a strange move in Japan. Having an all DLC release would be odd."

Thankfully, it looks like Capcom is listening to fans when it comes to the way its games are released.

"The Marvel team had slightly different ideas than the Street Fighter team, so they're always going in different directions. But it's a piece of feedback from the Western side at least we've been very clear about, saying there's a lot of talk saying we would like to have this as a DLC option rather than a disc based release.

"Of course there are people here who still like the disc based release, collectors and people who just appreciate the disc who are worried if they're not able to go online then the game won't work.

"There's some from both camps. It's a developing process for Capcom."

A brand spanking new hand drawn postcard has been created by Shinkiro for an upcoming evcent in Japan (highlighted by Famitsu Magazine). It showcases a rather odd addition to the roster: Rocket Raccoon? Take a look for yourself, people!

If they keep adding onto this already gigantic roster we might get a little fatigued from the sheer amount of characters! It is very interesting to see how they incorporate Rocket Raccoon into the game OR perhaps this was all just a big Halloween joke?

The stage show takes place on October 30th at the Kotobukiya in Akihabara, Japan starting from 11AM Japan time.

The v1.02 patch for Street Fighter 3 Third Strike Online Edition is now available on the PlayStation Network, it's an 18 megabyte download. Here's the changelog.

1) Improved YouTube video quality (for PS3 only). This makes the videos viewable at 360p resolution, up from 240p.

2) Added the ability to unassign “3-punches” and “3-kicks” on the Controls screen.

3) Re-enabled the option to play with a human partner in Training mode.

4) Changed the "recording" feature in training mode. This feature now allows you to practice against a dummy, which repeats your recorded inputs.

5) Fixed a bug that would cause an a negative level value to be displayed on the main menu after hitting the level cap.

6) Fixed a bug that would cause a crash when repeatedly pressing "Confirm" after viewing a Match from a downloaded Match Pack.

7) Added support for Music Pack DLC.

NYCC Post Thoughts and Impressions

GAME OF SHOW

Instead of boringly writing out paragraph upon paragraph about the con I'm going to do it in kind of a "speed demon" way. So without further adeu here are my thoughts:

The Convention Itself:

Feels Like its lost its luster and "fresh new smell"
Vendors were a little on the high price side
Artists Alley was my biggest disappointment
Felt like artists didn't really want to be there...as many of them were no shows
Cos-Players literally ruin the show as they are such a pain in the ass to maneuver around
The show was at capacity everyday and was just simply way to crowded for the Javitz Center
Still had a blast with the friends I went with... even though I think I broke my heel

Gaming (Overall):

Saving Grace of the show
More of a presence at the show than Comic Book Retailers (i.e. Marvel/DC)
Got to play MANY games from Capcom, Blizzard and many Indy's
Got very crowded in the gaming section and was extremely hard to get from point A to point B

What were the Best Games of the show? Street Fighter X Tekken + Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom III

Street Fighter X Tekken:

Game of Show Easily
Looks amazing in person (graphical)
Plays even better that SSF4AE right now
TAG function is brilliant and smooth as ever
Played as Zangief and I can Say this: Watch out 'cause he's a beast in this game
The Roster is off the charts (so many fighters to choose its almost daunting)

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom III

10x better then the previous rendition (UMC3)
Faster Combo's and easier hit detection on said combos
So Many new characters to choose form (my favorite new being Nova)
Looks like they finally got X-Factor down as it's isnt god-like anymore
Nerfed Phoenix IMO ... which is awesome for the rest of us LOL
Graphics look roughly the same but have a nice glow to them (very bright)

OVERALL CONVENTION GRADE: 7/10

Niitsuma recently tweeted that the preparations for the upcoming New York Comic Con are complete and that all that needs to be practiced is the UMvC3 stage show. It is strongly suspected that the last four characters will be revealed over the next several days; Nova, Frank West, Rocket Raccoon and Phoenix Wright.

Translation: I have completed as much of the NYCC presentation as I can for now. All that is left is the on-site rehearsal and other miscellaneous things.

Last year at New York Comic Con 2010 four characters were revealed. Those were Arthur, Spencer, MODOK and Magneto. These characters were not playable at the event, but trailers and images were still released anyway.

It's highly possible that it will play out the same way, but with the game being this close to release it's very unlikely that the revealed characters will be unplayable on the show floor.
